Murmuration (Day 303)

The Sanderlings stole the show this morning. It’s not uncommon to see a murmuration or two as I’m swimming at the Albany Bulb. But usually, these are short bursts; flashes of white and black making patterns across the sky. There’s never any time to get out my camera and capture them.

Today, though, the sanderlings were out in force, swooping up and down, swirling through the air as if they were putting on a show for us. There was a good crowd of 8 o’clock swimmers today and we all stopped to watch the murmurations dancing through the sky.

After a while, the spectacle died down; the birds moved on and we got down to the business of swimming. The temperature was 60 degrees today, the water clear and calm. Angie and I podded up with Lisa, which is always a good match for us. She’s a little bit faster and so she keeps us working, but not so fast that it’s useless to try and keep up.
